The Hills are Alive, MTV's The City-Not so much!

What happens when you take a winning formula and duplicate it exactly? As an ex-modeling agent, I know firsthand how images are created, but charisma and personality can not be manipulated. MTV's trailer for the spin off show, The City are aspirational, fashioniable and promote a model like elevation of main character, Whitney Port. As seen in the first two episodes it is the supporting players around Whitney who are much more riveting than Port herself. WP as I will call her, while being groomed for this lead character, simply lacks the confrontational, sympathetic star power of Lauren Conrad. WP, while placed in conflict is not herself a leader, afraid to go against the grain and much too sweet. Fantastic for life, not interesting for so called 'reality" tv.

The more riveting characters are of NY socialite A.K.A social, Olivia, whom a show could have been completely created around with WP as the supporting BF. Then you have Australian hottie, musician Jay and his model, room mate Adam with soon to be seen, super sad girlfriend. These characters will easily steal the show from WP. Spinning off a hit with a supporting character rarely works. Charisma and flare can not be created, no matter how sexy and fashionable the NYC fashion back drop of the legendary DVF storyline is.

Style tip- If you get a chance to go to NY any time soon, you must go and visit Diane Von Furstenberg's corporate offices in the meatpacking district. The stairwell that takes you to her highness most certainly look like THE stairway to heaven. If heaven does exist as James Lipton, of the actor's studio asks, let it be up through DVF's stairway.

When bad styling happens to Celebrities

Here is Kelly Ripa on the OMG worst dressed list for 2008. As I post about Madonna below, this dress is fun, but ironically, both celebs should have switched their furry frocks with one another. Kelly Ripa has very slim legs that don't have the depth of muscle that Madonna' do. I would have put Kelly in the grassy number which would have suited Kelly's petite body much better and put Madonna in the longer black Maribou dress. Kelly's outfit is a case of bad styling not a disaster. This dress is overwhelming Kelly's frame and the shoes are completely closing her in, Had Kelly worn a chunky cut up shoe like Madonna is below and simply shortened the hemline, this outfit would have worked. In it's current styling, the no hose paired with the almost go to work style shoe, just took this outfit from what could have been to confusing.

Style Tip-Busy and busy make simple, when creating a risky outfit, two busy pieces will cancel each other out Don't even think of bringing a work style shoe to the party.

When bad styling happens to Celebritiies

Madonna was just listed in this outfit on OMG as one of the worst dressed outfits for 2008. While Janet Jackson, Solange deserve their honors, Madonna's outfit is an example of bad styling. I actually think the dress is fun and flirty and a style departure even for the most reinvented master, Madonna herself. What should have been considered when accessorizing this grassy number. I always say, busy and busy make simple but in this case one simple mistake was made that threw off the whole look. Had Madonna worn black opaque tights instead of sheer panty hose, she would have achieved the look she was going for. The hose are simply too Vegas showgirl and Madonna's legs aren't long enough to pull it off. On top of it. Madonna has very short, masculine arms, loading up her arms with thick chunky bangles brings your eye right down to the belt in the middle of her waist, which is just too much going on in one area of her body.

Styling tip- Balance is very important when planning a risky outfit of your own. Black opaque tights are a fantastic neutralizer and when you put something heavy with heavy it will balance the weight of your outfit.

You have heard of leg warmers, how about a neck warmer. Making its way into our vocabulary this season, this Felix Ray little number with a bow, is exactly what you need to top off any outfit. I always talk about scarves as toppers. An outfit goes to the next level with the extra beats, if you run warm in turtlenecks, try a neck warmer instead. Grey is the new black. go ahead tie one on

Style tip-Make sure you have an arsenal of interesting scarves and toppers. These inexpensive style moments can be worn as your signature style every day paying themselves off in the first wear.

Style is all in the accents. Accessories build up any outfit from simple to smashing. I always say- fine isn't good- good isn't great. One extra moment in an outfit can take you from good to great. I love this Made Her Think grey tied up necklace on Gilt.com today. Invest in jewelry that can go the distance in your wardrobe.

Style tip- This piece has a lot of texture and more than one opportunity for styling. Don't be afraid to spend a little more on statement jewelry. Where you put your money in your wardrobe budget is important. My money is on this little grey number.

Stop reading and go directly to Hautelook.com. Habitual denim is clearing their skinny jeans. Quickstyle! Most of the washes shown are not trending, hence the ridiculous price. This season, it's dark denim or onyx as I show with Habitual's velocity jean pictured above. If you have read my book Closet Control (Sterling Publishing) then you know you can steal a pair at Hautelook.com and simply dye them indigo blue or jet black. A couple of packs of Rit dye at your supermarket and your washer or an oversized pot.

Skinny jeans are a double entendre for women. If you think you are skinny or want to be skinny than you own the skinny. If you think, NO WAY you are NOT skinny or your legs aren't skinny, you aren't even giving the skinny a try. The use of the word skinny just describes the bandwidth of the leg.. The skinny jean isn't going anywhere. No longer a trend but a staple. At these sample sale prices what do you have to lose?

Style tip- If you own more than 4 pairs of skinny jeans you do not need another pair. It is very normal to keep buying a shape that you love over and over again. Back pockets and washes are the simplest ways to update your skinny jeans. You can simply take the stitching out with a seam ripper and as I write above dye last season's wash to this season.

Double style tip-No multiples. Do not keep buying the same shape in several colors. In your denim wardrobe you can own two of the same shape only for the "in the laundry" factor.

Triple style tip-skinny jeans tucked into high heel boots, not so much. quiet down last season't look with a more organic, apres ski style boot.

quadruple style tip-Always wear a bigger proportion up top. The focal point for your viewers eye is your legs and whether you love your legs or not, you need this proportion up top for balance. Today's trends are not showing everything at once. It is a quieter sexy and in this example, styled correctly, you are rocking your legs.

Final tip-Heels are your legs best friend. wear them with the skinny and you will feel sexy like a rock star sexy.

Samantha Ronson fresh out of the hospital shopping at Barney's

After hours of stalking deals with a new male client, feeling cranky and needing some fuel, we charged upstairs to Barney's greengrass restaurant, Forget the almonds and the celery sticks, when I am shopping with a client, just give me carbs. Feverishly inhaling matzo brie and a latte, in walks Lindsey Lohan and Samantha Ronson. I have been this close to Lindsey before, but never did she look more beautiful in a navy flannel shirt and dark denim jeans. Her hair color was on point, she looked radiant. Feeling revived and ready to stalk more end of season deals, I then spot Celebrity stylist, Rachel Zoe in tow with Taylor her assistant, quickly scanning the mens floor, then poof she is gone. Monday's are a great day to shop, most celebs will take advantage of this time to score their deals.

Style tip-If you would rather stick needles in your eyes than go shopping. Monday is the ideal day to refill and revive your wardrobe. Who knows who you will run into.

Today's posting is very coco chanel in a recession. I thought I would show you this hot pink very, sex in the city silk draped halter dress. You might be saying hot pink right now? Yes, french designer, Catherine Malandrino, who is never afraid of using strong primary colors is showing what would be considered a rather summery dress in the dead of the holidays. I am more showing you this dress for the black opague tights. Wearing black tights with a soft silky fabric toughens up any pretty party dress. Sums up the French beautifully. Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside.

Style Tip- Consider pulling out your own summer dress and pairing with a pair of black tights, suede peeps and patent leather heels versus a leather pump. Throw on a gorgeous creme shimmery 3/4 length coat with a big black cashmere topper and you have the quintessential french palette filled with all sorts of fabulous textures.

Double Style Tip- One of my biggest mantras is-"Buy what you like, make it work for your life. I don't believe in seasonal dressing. If you pack your wardrobe away each season you are missing moments like these. Your wardrobe like your budget should flex hard. Work it!

To check out this little frock and a whole lot more from Catherine Malandrino, head on over to Gilt Group No dilly-dallying, this is a timed sample sale.

Chanel's latest boutique on trendy Robertson blvd is rocking a dress very much like the one listed in this post. Designer Madison Marcus is doing her homework. At $84 you can take home this little one armed number and rock your own Chanel moment without that "oh so" Chanel price tag.

Style Tip-Imitation is the purest form of flattery and you as the customer get to take advantage of the extreme difference in price. If you aren't the one percent that can cash free afford the original, never feel bad for searching out her knocked off sister. True style is part high-part low. Not every part of your outfit has to scream credit card debt.

Double style tip- asymetrical dressing is all about imbalanced-balance. Not only is this dress edgy and interesting, it has the ability to deflect figure flaws. Any time you show skin to your viewer, you trip the eye to look at your lovely shoulders versus drawing down towards your middle. When wearing jewelry, throw the bracelet on the bare side of the arm. Styling is all in the balance and skin is your ultimate accessory without the price tag.

TOMS Project Holiday-Give 30,000 pairs of shoes in 30 days

Help us give 30,000 pairs of shoes in 30 days.
As they always say, it is far better to give than to receive. Hey, what if you could give and receive? Genius, right? Toms Shoes, creator and founder Blake Mycosky had a very simple thought, give 30,000 shoes in thirty days? I know, Blake never thinks small. I was lucky enough to interview him on Fashion 411-it's NEVER just about the clothing. Toms Shoes is a one for one mission, Very simply put. You buy a pair they give a pair. Anna Wintour, Bill Clinton have both given Toms their thumbs up and so can you. 30,000 shoes in 30 days benefits the children of Ethiopia in fighting a completely preventable disease called podoconiosis.

Ethiopian children get this disease from walking in silica, rich, ancient volcanic mud without shoes. By simply wearing shoes prevents this disease entirely. Take the stress off of yourself and make it a Toms Xmas for everyone on your list this holiday. One for One, baby and One For All.

Style tip-Toms really showed up on my radar when they created the ultra hip and ultra chic wrap bootie. This boot is completely vegan and in olive green, pictured above, there is no better choice for a completely chic, utilitarian outfit. Just add Toms wrap boot and you are guaranteed to be the best dressed humanitarian in the room.

Double style tip-Olive green, better known as army green is one of my favorite colors to work with in wardrobing. You cannot put a color next to olive/army green that won't look interesting, edgy and spectacular. From your brights, blacks and earthtones. Go ahead make your day.

Hautelook.com Sample Sale picks for Thurs. Dec. 18

I like this little french ruffle shirt with petite buttons from Paul and Joe's sister collection. It breathes on the body which makes it a great component piece for your tighter bottoms. The buttons and slight ruffles ask your viewer to look up towards your face while the looseness of the top allow you to relax your tummy.

Style tip-when buying tops that are boxier, look at them as your canvas. They are the beginning of your outfit not the finish. Take this shirt and throw a men's style, fitted vest over while buttoning only the top button of the vest. This style tip creates shape on your waist. Pair this impeteux shirt with a shorter cropped jacket allowing the bottom of the hem to hang longer over your skinny jeans or your wide leg denim trousers. Shaping your body is not always being obvious, creating layers points the viewers eye to your waist in a subtle, not obvious way.

It is the subtle moments that create style.

Hautelook.com Sample Sale picks for Thurs. Dec. 18

The secret to any good wardrobe is an interesting top. This Paul and Joes Sister, Dojo tunic is edgy but sweet and above all interesting. When building your wardrobe, you want to buy heavy on tops.. I call it the SEE level. What ever you can see the most in your outfit is what you need to refresh most often.

Style Tip-Wear this dojo tunic with your skinny jeans. The concept for styling in this case is tight bottom, loose top. Pairing this dojo tunic with a wide leg denim trouser also has the same effect, as the eye in both instances will go to the thigh, which is the figure point you are highlighting as well as the apple of your bum.

Tight on Top, tight on the bottom makes for too tight and not the right proportion. Styling is all in the proportions.

Vera Wang's Lavender label halter, tulle, v neck dress.
I love this dress and let me tell you why, any time you have a sheer over lay such as tulle it allows the eye to frame your body. Styling is all about pulling the viewers eye where you want them to look. I am not crazy about the little hanging down piece of tulle, even Vera can have her costumy moments, but at 60 percent off and $180 dollars, simply have your seamstress even it out.

Style Tip- Be aware of your best parts and frame tulle and sheer clothing around them. When shopping on sale and you see a piece of clothing that can be improved by cutting here or snipping there, do it. Clothing off the rack is meant for you to personalize and alter around your own curves.

Tulle on over to http://www.hautelook.com

Style Tip-evening wear should not just be saved for evenings. Buy what you like, make it work with your life. Pair this dress with a a beautiful kitten heel and a 3/4 shimmery coat for the holidays. After you have gotten your red carpet wear, dawn this frock in the day with your favorite gladiator sandals from last season and a luxurious sweater for day time chic.

VERY, Very Chic-The Norma Jayne Guide To Style.

Have you noticed how some blogs are just soooo commerce without the art? Who can't talk about Guiseppe Zanotti or Christian Louboutin? I mean, right? In my opinion a blog should have a distinct point of view, a focused message of who you are and what you are presenting. Fashion as art in this tough economic time is inspiring, Fashion as big Commerce- not so much. There is a really fine line of how we should be accepting and consuming our over branded and marketed fashion as art.

Enter N. Jayne Seward. Fashion editor for California Apparel News and frequent contributor to Vogue.Co.uk, Surface and many others. Jayne's new blog, Very Very Chic, is indeed Very Very Chic. If you want to find out about all the latest indie and artistic designers you MUST follow Jayne. Not only is Jayne a writer, she is a stylist. Jayne is responsible for all of those dreamy, glam shoots for the CAN. Jayne CAN all right and should CAN all of us and move to Paris.

A writer is a writer, but a stylist/fashion writer, one deadly combination. Hmm, reminds me of someone else I know.

Snob blogging of WANT IT-HATE IT. We are in a time in history, that we can't and shouldn't HAVE any of it, but who says you can't look.

Dirty, Sexy Money's Donald Sutherland at Shoe boutique Sigererson Morrison

While shopping with a client at Sigerson Morrison on Third Street last week, Donald Sutherland strolled in with his injured little dog to meet his wife who was trying on shoes. HOT TIP! Only buy Sigerson ON SALE, they have fantastic 50 percent off sales all the time. Back to the Dirty,Sexy, Money star who seemed to have no idea how his dog's leg had been hurt, but was wearing a fun holiday palette of pumpkin pleated pants. Those pants sound risky, but paired with a dark overcoat and a light blue button down and scarf, Donald actually looked quite stylish. As if he wasn't trying at all. The ultimate Care don't Care attitude. Apparently it works more with his attire than with his little injured pawed friend.

Change the way you shop for life-Fashion 411-it's NEVER just about the clothing.

When life brings you lemons make lemonade. Right now life could feel like a lemon but as Wayne Dyer says "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."

Hold on to your hats. I know changing can be hard to do, especially when it comes to your prize possesions. Your Manolo, Jimmy's and all your other high end luxury favorites. I want you to have what makes you happy, but make your savings account a place of luxury and your wardrobe a stock portfolio. You must tune into the most important show I have taped so far. I am lucky enough to interview the author of Futureshop, Dan Nissinoff. http://www.futureshop.com who also wrote the foreward to my book Closet Control. Dan will share that the auction culture mentality is what you need to adopt. Let's face it, you know that once you buy your most coveted item of the season, you never feel the same about it next season. Who says you have to? Not Dan, not I. Sell the sucker and turn your dollars back into your wardrobe. If you just aren't a resale kind of gal and believe me, after you get to know me a little better, it will be the only way to shop.

I also have the pleasure in interviewing the founder of Avelle, The New Bag, Borrow or steal, Lloyd Lapidus. http://bagborrowandsteal.com Sex and the City, the movie, showcased Lloyd's no commitment attitude towards your favorite luxury handbags. Gucci, Prada, Fendi. don't own it, rent it. Be smart, be fabulous. Saving for your future is so much sexier than wearing your savings in your wardrobe.

How To Wash and Shrink with Bobbe Joy

Formats available:Quicktime (.mov)
Looking for that great coat for the holidays? Maybe you already own it. Did you know you can shrink leather? Or shrink an oversized wool coat? Watch this video as I show you how to take an oversized coat from circa 1990's and update it just by throwing it in the washing machine. Here are some tips on what you should be looking for to shrink in your own wardrobe.

1-Oversized leather and wool coats-boxy will only shrink down to less boxy, you should be looking for a coat that has a nipped in waist.

2-Only natural fibers will shrink, but don't be afraid to wash coats that aren't natural for a good cleaning.

3-But you might be saying, what about the lining and the shoulder pads?

4-Wrinkled linings are very chic and while most of them will shrink up quite a bit, you can steam the wrinkles out quite nicely.

5-If the shoulder pads get a little twisted, it is a minor alteration to fix the, but consider taking the shoulder pads out all together, for a cleaner, leaner look.

6-Sleeves sometimes can shrink a little too much, don't be afraid to push your sleeves up, showing the lining for the ultimate care don't care attitude.

7-If pushed up sleeves is not your thing, you can have your seamstress place a slit in the sleeve to create a chic stylish look on your now shorter sleeve.

8-No need to put detergent in the washer, turn the water on high and get ready for a new coat. Either way, you weren't wearing it.

9-Each coat will shrink completely differently, this tip is a great alternative to spending a lot of money in alterations, but will not work perfectly and is a case by case situation.

SO, DO YOU REALLY THINK YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR?

How To Recession Chic Your Wardrobe

The Peoples' Stylist, Barbra Horowitz shows comedian Chelsea Handler how to recession chic her wardrobe.
Formats available:Quicktime (.mov)
Please check out the following video from my book/dvd Closet Control-Sterling Publishing. In this time of new opportunities, that's right, new opportunities. Your mind is a vacuum, lead it somewhere new, shift with the negativity into the positive. One of the first places to make shifts that will spread to the rest of your life is in your wardrobe. I urge you to think differently now about how you spend money.
Ask your self before you do these three simple questions.

Do I need it?
Will I be able to resell it?
Can I rework it?

This clip with Chelsea Handler will give you easy common sense ways to make the most of the wardrobe you already have. It is time to be eco-selfish and eco-nomical.
Life is changing and while it can feel unnerving, perhaps this reality will reshape your own possibilities.

SO YOU THINK YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR.

Who is the person that hires a stylist

Formats available:Quicktime (.mov)

Working with a stylist is not just for celebrities or the rich and famous. In our downturn economy, it is time to learn how to get dressed in an eco-selfish and eco-nomical way.
It is never too late to learn not only the art, but the skinny on getting dressed on your budget. Living up to the Joneses is so George W. Bush. It is time to get real with your checkbook. Check out this video clip of the types of clients that I work with.

How Barbra Horowitz got started cutting up Mens' oversized Tee Shirts

Check out this video clip where I talk about how I learned to cut up oversized men's tee shirts into sexy fitted tops. Britney Spears was my very first customer and this is a super big shout out to Wendy Schechter who was the costume designer for Britney's film Crossroads. Wendy, taught me how to lace up the one armed top I had cut. Wendy took them to the set and Britney bought the very first three tops I ever made. Thanks Wendy,
I started a business called Rigged Tee Shirt Couture from one little technique that Wendy taught me. You can make your dreams come true too, just one snip at a time. You never know when someone is coming into your life to change it forever. Be on the look out, your guardian angel might just be sitting right next to you.

Barbra Horowitz says It's only clothing.

Is your closet bringing you down? Do you think I have, therefore I am? Or is it? I am over-extended on my credit cards, hear me roar? Time to go into your closet and get creative.
